The singer is looking a little less glamorous than we’re used to seeing her on the Sept. cover of i-D magazine.
But that doesn’t mean she looks any less gorgeous!
On the contrary, the fresh-faced 21-year-old made for a natural knockout with barely there makeup and understated hair, as well as tomboyish clothes for her outdoor London cover shoot.
And according to Gomez, the foreign location helped contribute to her ravishingly raw look.
“I love doing shoots overseas,” she said in an interview with the publication. “Actually being there and feeling the environment adds a realness to the shoot.”
Indeed, this is the most real we’ve seen Gomez! Not only did she rock unkempt, beachy waves, but she ditched the sexy mini dresses she tends to wear on the red carpet in favor of an oversize John Varvatos coat, crew neck Marni T-shirt and Denham jeans that she confidently wore as she stared straight into the camera sans smile.
The look doesn’t exactly scream “Come & Get It” like, say, the racy sheer-skirt-and bustier number she wore for her music video or the the sultry shoots she’s done for other magazines in the past, but the 21-year-old thinks there’s something to be said for toned down spreads.
“It’s so easy to wear incredible, beautiful dresses and look super glamorous, because you have the power of Photoshop, but a shoot that’s really stripped-down and raw is really fun to do,” said Gomez. “I was being rained on, it was freezing, I was covered in a giant sweater and my hair was all over the place. I got to just be in that moment and feel like I was there.”
And judging from the stylish songbird’s playful cover, which sees her gamely smiling as she strikes the traditional i-D wink for the cover while wearing a Margaret Howell sweater, we’re guessing she really did enjoy her casual turn in front of the camera.
Hey, if we could look half as amazing as Gomez does with a freshly scrubbed complexion and bedhead, we wouldn’t complain about a little rain, either!
